Excel Number Format Code Generator
Free online tool · No signup · Runs in your browser
Generate custom number, currency, percent and date format codes with a sample display preview.
Your data stays in this browser tool. No account or upload to a processing service required.
Instructions
- Choose the format category and relevant settings, then build.
- Copy only the format-code line into Excel Format Cells → Custom.
- Numeric and date samples have separate fields.
Understanding your result
A format with two decimal places can display 12.3 as 12.30 while retaining the original stored number. A currency symbol adds a label to the display; it does not convert currencies. Use the preview as a starting point and confirm the code in Excel.
What to do if you have a problem
If a date format shows an unexpected date, check whether the cell holds a genuine Excel date value. If separators differ from the preview, inspect your Excel locale. Use the generated code in the custom number format field, rather than pasting it as a worksheet formula.
What to know before using the result
Formatting alters display, not stored values. Currency symbols do not convert values. Preview uses English separators and browser rounding, so Excel locale and precision can differ. Date formatting requires an existing Excel date/time value. This offers a constrained set of formats, not a complete custom-format parser.
These tools work with pasted text or supported CSV files rather than Excel workbook files. CSV exports contain values and do not preserve workbook formatting, formulas or multiple worksheets. Formula builders produce formula text to use in Excel. Data processing runs in the browser tool.
Try an example
#,##0.00;(#,##0.00);#,##0.00;@ displays -1234.567 as (1,234.57).
Summary
Apply the custom format in Excel to change how values display without changing the stored numbers.
