Excel Cell Reference Converter Online

Free online tool · No signup · Runs in your browser

Convert a cell or range between absolute, relative and mixed A1 references and show R1C1 relative to an origin cell.

Your data stays in this browser tool. No account or upload to a processing service required.

Instructions

  1. Enter an A1 cell or rectangular range, optionally prefixed by a sheet name.
  2. Choose the reference mode and the origin cell for R1C1 offsets.
  3. Convert and download both forms.

Understanding your result

From an origin at B2, A1 is one row and one column earlier, so its relative R1C1 form uses offsets of -1. Absolute markers change whether a coordinate stays fixed. Test the converted reference at the same origin you entered.

What to do if you have a problem

If the converter rejects a formula, supply a single cell or range reference instead. If offsets look wrong, check origin row and column. Preserve mode retains existing absolute markers; choose the intended mode before using a converted reference in a formula you will copy elsewhere.

What to know before using the result

Processes a single reference, not a formula. Supports Excel bounds A1:XFD1048576. Excludes named ranges, whole-column references, external workbooks and reversed ranges. Preserve mode retains the original absolute markers. Origin coordinates define relative offsets; the original sheet prefix is retained.

These tools work with pasted text or supported CSV files rather than Excel workbook files. CSV exports contain values and do not preserve workbook formatting, formulas or multiple worksheets. Formula builders produce formula text to use in Excel. Data processing runs in the browser tool.

Try an example

B2:D5, absolute mode, origin A1: $B$2:$D$5 and R2C2:R5C4.

Summary

Use the converted reference with the origin and absolute markers intended for your worksheet.
