Excel Percentage Change Formula Builder
Free online tool · No signup · Runs in your browser
Build a percentage change formula with an explicit choice for a zero baseline.
Your data stays in this browser tool. No account or upload to a processing service required.
Instructions
- Enter old and new value cells.
- Choose whether a zero baseline gives a blank, whether IFERROR hides evaluation errors, or whether to show the Excel error.
- Build the formula and format its Excel result cell as Percentage.
Understanding your result
Moving from 80 to 100 gives (100-80)/80 = 0.25. Apply a percentage format in Excel to display 25%. A change from zero has no defined percentage under this formula. Decide how you want that case displayed before using an error wrapper.
What to do if you have a problem
If the result looks like 0.25 instead of 25%, change the cell's display format. If a negative baseline produces a surprising sign, inspect the arithmetic with those actual values. An IFERROR blank can hide other worksheet errors as well, so test references before filling the formula down.
What to know before using the result
Uses (new − old) / old and returns a fraction. Change from a zero baseline is undefined. IFERROR blank hides all evaluation errors and requires Excel 2007 or later. Negative baselines use the same arithmetic and may give counterintuitive signs. No formula evaluation or financial interpretation is performed.
These tools work with pasted text or supported CSV files rather than Excel workbook files. CSV exports contain values and do not preserve workbook formatting, formulas or multiple worksheets. Formula builders produce formula text to use in Excel. Data processing runs in the browser tool.
Try an example
=IF(A2=0,"",(B2-A2)/A2)
Summary
Format the returned fraction as a percentage and decide how your worksheet should handle a zero baseline.
