Description: In this video, we will compare text in excel. In order to compare two or more cells or strings, you can do it easily with functions like EXACT which returns either true or false values. This function is very useful for tasks such as comparing names and other items that have a clear binary answer. Table of Content; 00:00 Introduction 01:01 Comparing Text Using = Operator 01:40 Comparing text using EXACT Function 02:11 Using IF Function to wrap Boolean Output 03:40 Comparing Text of Multiple Cells 05:25 Conclusion First Lets Learn the Syntax of the EXACT Function; EXACT( string_value , compare_to ) Explanation of Parameters used in Syntax; - String_Value: This is the text to compare. - Compare To: The compare value that we want to compare with, it can be a cell reference or another string as well. Pro Tip : Keep in mind that in compare to parameter, you can use a cell reference. Second Let's Compare Text Using the = Operator; = is not an operator for comparing text it is used with arithmetic operators like addition and subtraction etc... but if we put two values next to each other using this symbol Excel thinks they are related so it will compare them even though they are not text values. But this works fine for strings that have the same number of characters e.g "Prakash" = "Sarath" because both contain six letters, but compare two different strings like "ABCD1234E" and "A123456789", Excel will compare them as well because they both have the same number of characters which is nine. Now Let's compare two text cells using EXACT Function; In order to compare two or more cells, we need a function that returns true or false values and then use IF/THEN statement with it as shown in below screenshot. In this example "Prakash" is compare to "Prakash Banerjee" cell. Then the function returns true because both are equal, but if you change one of them then it will return false as shown in below screenshot. In this example the EXACT Function was used inside IF/THEN statement along with another text compare operator using =(Equal) symbol, which will return either true or false. Now let's compare text of multiple cells; In this example, we have three text cells and we want to compare them using the EXACT function. In order to do that, we need to use the OR logical operator along with IF/THEN statement as shown in below screenshot. The IF/THEN statement will return true if any of the text cells is equal, as shown in below screenshot. Conclusion; In this video, we learned about compare text in excel and how to use the EXACT function along with other operators to compare them easily. We also learned about using IF/THEN statement with compare functions. Finally, compare text using EXACT Function; In order to compare two or more cells or strings, you can do it easily with functions like EXACT which returns either true or false values.
