Description: In this video, we will show you how to use the INDEX and MATCH functions to perform a Left Lookup in Excel. By default, the VLOOKUP function only looks to the right, but by using INDEX and MATCH together, you can lookup values in any column and return the corresponding value to the left. This is especially helpful when you need to get values from different columns or rows that are not adjacent on your worksheet! Table Of Content 00:00 Introduction 00:23 Left Lookup Using INDEX MATCH Formula 02:40 Conclusion We Will be using INDEX MATCH Super combo to perform Left Lookup function in excel. INDEX function will help us to get the Left most value from our data while MATCH function with lookup_value as Left column number in our table_array. This formula is very helpful when you have data in different columns and you need corresponding values from other columns. For demonstration, we have used a simple table consisting of employee names and their designation. You can download the dataset used in this tutorial from our website. Left Lookup Using INDEX MATCH Formula: In this example, we want to find out the designation of the employee whose name is "Sam". To do so, we will use a Left lookup formula that combines the INDEX and MATCH functions. The INDEX function will look for the Leftmost value in the designated column (column A), while the MATCH function with lookup_value as "Sam" and left_column_number as "A" will return the position of that value in the table array. Putting it all together, our Left lookup formula looks like this: =INDEX(B:B,MATCH(A$15,A:A,0)) This formula will return the value "Designation Manager" which is the designation of the employee whose name is "Sam". Conclusion: We have seen how to use the INDEX and MATCH functions to perform Left Lookups in Excel. This can be a very handy formula when you need to get values from different columns or rows that are not adjacent on your worksheet. Thanks for watching!
